Software Developer, DevEx (Stateful Systems)

Slice
Worldwide Full Time Negotiable 3 days ago

About the Job

We believe independent restaurants deserve the same advantages as big chains without giving up their independence.

Ilir Sela started Slice in his family’s pizzerias, where he saw firsthand what it takes to run a local shop. Now we’re taking everything we’ve learned beyond pizza, to taquerias, delis, burger joints, and other neighborhood staples.

We put technology, marketing, buying power, and support to work for more than 15,000 restaurants, so owners spend less time on admin, marketing, and order management and more time growing their business. They remain independent, but never alone.

Key Responsibilities

As a Software Engineer on the DevEx Stateful Systems team, you'll build the tooling and services that let every engineer at Slice work confidently with our databases, queues, caches, streaming pipelines and data lake. Our first priority is availability, from the systems that let customers order pizza and shops fulfil those orders, through to the reporting used across the business. You'll bring strong backend engineering to that problem, turning expert, manual work into self-service capabilities that product teams actually want to use.
You will:
Build internal tooling, services and APIs that let engineers provision, change, migrate and troubleshoot their databases, topics and caches safely, without waiting on us.
Replace manual operational work with automation: upgrades, migrations, access requests, backups and restores.
Help operate and harden our production data stores and take part in the team's on-call rotation.
Partner with product engineering teams on schema design, migrations, query performance and ORM usage, bringing the perspective of someone who has done it from the application side.
Manage infrastructure as code with Terraform and improve CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions.
Improve observability across our stateful systems, instrumenting services and building alerts that teams can act on.
Use generative AI to help build and maintain internal services, including agentic services.
Champion best practices around reliability, safe change, security and platform adoption. Slice works on a "you build it, you run it" model, so our job is to give teams the tooling and expertise to run their systems well, not to run them on their behalf.

Our platform is constantly evolving, but some of the technologies you'll work with include:
PostgreSQL (AWS RDS)
Python
Terraform
AWS
GitHub & GitHub Actions
Datadog
Kafka (Amazon MSK) & Debezium
Apache Iceberg on S3, with Glue, Athena & EMR
Airflow (MWAA) & dbt
Generative AI (Claude Code & AI Agents)

Most of our tooling is written in Python, but strong engineers from any general-purpose language, such as Go or Java, are just as welcome. More important than experience with every individual tool is solid engineering fundamentals and the curiosity to go deep on data infrastructure.

Required Skills & Abilities

We're looking for backend engineers who have owned production systems end to end, including the database underneath them, and who now want to spend their time making other engineers more productive.
You write production-quality software in a general-purpose language such as Python, Go or Java. You've built services and APIs, you test what you ship, and you give and receive thoughtful code review.
You've run a relational database in production. You've designed schemas, shipped migrations on a busy database, chased a slow query from the ORM to the query plan, and added the right index to fix it.
You understand retries, idempotency, consistency trade-offs and how systems fail, and you design with those failure modes in mind.
You have solid AWS experience, including IAM, RDS and networking basics, and you manage infrastructure with Terraform.
You've built and maintained delivery pipelines, ideally with GitHub Actions.
You instrument what you build and write alerts worth acting on. You've been on call for production systems, and incident response and blameless postmortems are part of how you work.
You've built things for other engineers: CLIs, APIs, automation. You think in reusable systems rather than one-off fixes, and you know that a tool nobody adopts hasn't solved anything.
Application.
30-minute introductory conversation.
60-minute conversation with department management.
60-minute technical interview with future peers and team members.
